For my submission for the Penguin Book Cover competition, I designed a cover for The Night Manager, an espionage novel by John le Carré. The books plot revolves around the night manager of a Cairo hotel who is recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer's inner circle where he gets involved with a local woman who is the girlfriend of a local gangster. For this cover design I wanted to avoid the typical clichés of typical espionage books and focuses on som key themes instead. I chose to work with the concept of intertwining relations and claustrophobia, two integral parts of the plot. To construct the composition I created a physical collage of images I took that reflect the themes and digitally treated them with bitmapping and an accent colour. The chaotic composition wraps around the sides of the book, drawing attention from the title all the way to the blurb. The final outcome is bold and high contrast, standing out from any of the books it would be sat next to on a shelf.
